So, having written what I thought was needful, I can now come to extract out of Peter’s message the verse that takes us back to when John the Baptist saw the Holy Spirit come down from heaven as a dove on Jesus and remain on Him. This is what Peter said to those folk. ‘You know the message God send to the people of Israel, telling the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. You know what happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee, after the baptism that John preached – how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how He went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, for God was with Him!’ (Acts 10:36-38) Why should Jesus, the Son of God, be anointed?

In the house of a gentile! a Roman centurion! Peter was led by the Holy Spirit to say that Jesus, the Son of God, this God-man, Christ Jesus, who said to the people and the Jewish clergy that He was the ‘I AM’, Jehovah, Yahweh! the very statement for which later on, Caiaphas and a reduced Sanhedrin Council condemned Him to death, why had HE to be anointed by the infilling of the Holy Spirit! The apostle Peter refers directly to the moment the Holy Spirit came on Jesus like a dove, that at this amazing event, His baptism in water, God the Father chose to declare openly to the crowd that was gathered around John the Baptist, many people and the clergy that were present: ‘You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.’ (Luke 3: 22). His infilling with the Holy Spirit, was declared to be His anointing, it meant what it meant! To John the Baptist, for what he saw, confirmed to him that Jesus was the Son of God, (John 1: 18) as mentioned previously. But Jesus was the Messiah, the anointed ONE! Soon after Jesus began to preach the Gospel. Jesus testified to His anointing in the synagogue at Nazareth when He said: ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed me to preach the Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoner and recovering of sight to the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord! (Luke 4: 18-19) That is what this anointing does, Jesus ministered as a man and as such, He had to be anointed, to be empowered to preach the Gospel that God gave Him, soon, after that infilling, Jesus as a man, was led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

Luke, inspired by the Holy Spirit, clearly says: ‘Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit returned from Jordan and was led in the desert, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. I do not want to dwell on this event except that when it was all over, Luke mentions again: After his temptation: ‘Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about Him spread through the whole countryside. He taught in their synagogues, and everyone praised Him!’ (Luke 4: 14-15) The anointing in the New Testament, although completely spiritual, was first practiced in kind, in the Old Testament, it is stated in it that persons and things were anointed, and it meant that such people and objects were holy, meaning, separated unto God for a special function and not another. The tabernacle and its utensils were carefully anointed. Israel at one point asked Samuel for a king, after a big disagreement God told Samuel to go ahead and give Israel a king, but they could not choose whom they wanted, God directed Samuel as who would be this king, and God led him to anoint a man called Saul, he was the first king of Israel; it is written that Saul: ‘Was an impressive young man without equal among the Israelites – a head taller than any other!... To Him Samuel said after he sent his servant away: You stay here awhile, so that I may give you a message from God. Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on Saul’s head and kissed him saying: has not the Lord anointed you as leader over his inheritance? (1 Samuel 10) Thus, Saul became the first man to be anointed as king of Israel! He reined forty years!
