Thus, to be this spotless lamb of God, Jesus had to submit completely to the will of His Father. It is written that every disobedience to God is sin, so, to that end, He had to conduct His ministry as a man, and although as I said: He had nothing to repent from, yet He went to the Jordan to be baptised by John whose calling was to bring the people to repent and be baptised, hence it is written: ‘Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptised by John. But John tried to deter Him, saying: I need to be baptised by you, and do you come to me? Jesus replied: Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfil all the righteousness. Then John consented.’ (Luke 3: 13-14)

So, it had to be done to fulfil all righteousness, it was followed by a astonishing act of god, for it is as Jesus came out of the water, that something very significant happened, that would not have happened if He had not baptised! for: ‘As soon as Jesus was baptised, He went out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and He saw (John saw) the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lightning on Him (Jesus). And a voice from heaven said: This is my Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased.’ (Luke 3: 16-17) God, the Father, declared publicly that Jesus was His one and only Son, John the Baptist and his disciples heard it, such as Andrew and Peter, his brother, heard it. We must not omit the Pharisees, Sadducees, and the people that came to be baptised by John, all heard God declare to them who Jesus really was!

About three years later, it was the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, that brought the  the birth of the Church; this great event could not have happened if Jesus had not been baptised, it was when He was baptised that the Holy Spirit came on Jesus as a dove and this was an important sign to John the Baptist, if that is the right word, a fulfilment might be a better word! For this is what happened: ‘The next day John saw Jesus coming towards him and said: Look the lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is the one I meant when I said: A man who comes after me has surpassed me because He was before me. I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptising with water was that He might be revealed to Israel.’ (John 1: 29-31) What a statement, what an appointment! What a blessing! for it is obvious that John’s great joy was that he was sent for such an accomplishment! such a divine mission in which he delighted. Before he saw Jesus, and before He came to be baptised by him, God told Him, that he would be given a sign, which would reveal to him, that a man that he did not know was in reality the Son of God! Everything that is written is of great importance, we cannot allow ourselves to bypass it without thanking God for the precision of all that concerns the Lord Jesus Christ, His Son, our Saviour.

This is what John the Baptist said when he saw the Holy Spirit descend on Jesus the day after he baptised Him, I mentioned this before but it bears repeating for it is very important: ‘Then John gave this testimony: I saw the Spirit (the holy Spirit) come down from Heaven as a dove and remain on Him. I would not have known Him, except that the one who sent me (God) to baptise with water told me: The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is He who will baptise with the Holy Spirit. I have seen and testify that this is the Son of God.’ (John 1: 32-34) These words concerning an important part of our Lord’s ministry is hardly mentioned or enlarged upon, and yet it was a turning point in the life of the Lord Jesus Christ, because it was from that moment that Jesus began His public ministry, in fact I will go as far as to state that if Jesus’s baptism in water  had not taken place, the Holy Spirit would not have come down on Him, it show the important of obedience ,for from the moment Jesus left the Jordan river, He went into the Judean desert where after forty days of fasting He was tempted by Satan! After this, as it is written: ‘Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Holy Spirit, and news about Him spread through the whole countryside. He taught in their synagogues, and every one praised Him! The Gospel He began to preach would eventually be preached through the whole world! And reached even me!
