We are not told if they returned into the boat or if they sat around on the beach; not that it matters. But I believe that while they were eating their breakfast, they may have sat in silence! Yet, whatever they may have been speaking about, it did them a lot of good, especially to Peter who, after the way the Lord dealt with them so lovingly, they must have felt like they were back to all the long months, during which they walked with Jesus, living, talking, and eating together! After such a breakfast, Peter was more relaxed and ready to hear what Jesus was going to say. I wonder if they felt that they were going to stay with Him, and follow Him, as they did before, and that, at last Jesus was preparing them to claim the kingdom. 

That earthly kingdom thought affected much of their relationship with the Lord, because they were not taught by their teachers, who did not know themselves, that the Messiah would come twice, first to bring a spiritual kingdom through the Church, and then come a second time to set up a Kingdom on earth over all nations from Jerusalem, to last a thousand years, as it is prophesied, in which the Israelites will have a central role. It is written: ‘It was necessary, then, for the copies of the heavenly things to be purifies with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. For Christ did not enter a man-made sanctuary that was the copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God’s presence, nor did He enter heaven to offer Himself again and again, the way the Jewish high priest entered the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. Then Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But now He has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of Himself. Just as man is destined to die once, and after to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once (firstly) to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for Him. (Hebrews 9: 23-28) ---These (meaning all the saints of the Old Testament) were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised. God had planned something better for us (Christians) so that only together with us would they be made perfect! (Hebrews 11: 39) and finally: ‘Therefore since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe. (Hebrews 12: 28) 

As you read the New Testament you will come across this question. The last being just before Jesus ascended as it is written: ‘So then they met together, they asked Him: Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom of Israel? He said to them: It is not for you to know the times and dates the Father has set by His own authority. (Acts 1: 6-7) I strongly believe that having returned to heaven, the disciples expected His return during their life time, yet, twenty centuries since His ascension, His Church is still waiting. But the present signs do show that Jesus is coming soon to set up the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom God was, is, and is to come! 

But after erring to mention this important truth, let us return to where we left the Lord.

and the disciples on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. What is more serious, is that Jesus reached the point for which He came, it is written: ‘So, when they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter: Simon, son of John, do you truly love me more than these? These, meaning his boat and his old way of life. What importance did it still have deep inside Him? Jesus knew what would follow, but He still had to hear what He needed to hear, from Peter’s own lips, to discover what was most important to him; to continue fishing, or do His will! and to do it properly, Peter had to love Him more than fishing. Jesus really brought him back to the original call, when He said to him, and Andrew, John and James, the sons of Zebedee! ‘Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.’ So, the answer came: ‘Yes, Lord’ he said,’ you know that I love you!’ Jesus said, ‘Feed my lambs.’ A Pastoral call to care for His sheep when He would go back to His Father’s house!
